Dixmoor (formerly Specialville) is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,934.

Dixmoor is adjacent to Harvey, Illinois, and keeps Harvey's east-west numbering system, even though all of the village lies west of Ashland Avenue.

Geography

Dixmoor is located at 41°37'51" North, 87°39'59" West (41.630784, -87.666446).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.2 km2 (1.2 mi2). 3.2 km2 (1.2 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,934 people, 1,372 households, and 887 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,224.9/km2 (3,164.6/mi2). There were 1,471 housing units at an average density of 458.0/km2 (1,183.3/mi2). The racial makeup of the village was 30.81% White, 57.12% African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 9.48% from other races, and 2.19% from two or more races. 18.20% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,372 households out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 34.2% were married couples living together, 22.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.56.

In the village the population was spread out with 30.4% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $26,677, and the median income for a family was $30,423. Males had a median income of $29,777 versus $30,714 for females.
