Northfield is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, approximately fifteen miles north of Chicago. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 5,389.
Northfield has the headquarters of Kraft Foods.
Northfield is located at 42°6'7" North, 87°46'30" West (42.101927, -87.775079). Northfield has a school called Middlefork (K-3) and a school called Sunset Ridge School (4-8) The population is 5983 It shares its zip code with Winnetka (60093) The high school is the prestigous New Trier High School. Some kids also choose to go to loyola academy instead. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.7 km2 (3.0 mi2). 7.7 km2 (3.0 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 5,389 people, 2,155 households, and 1,532 families residing in the village. The population density was 702.9/km2 (1,822.4/mi2). There were 2,241 housing units at an average density of 292.3/km2 (757.9/mi2). The racial makeup of the village was 92.48% White, 0.52% African American, 0.04% Native American, 5.57% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 1.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 2,155 households out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 3.4% from 18 to 24, 21.9% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 20.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.0 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $91,313, and the median income for a family was $114,279. Males had a median income of $85,788 versus $36,567 for females.
